For Struggling Single Parents

Single parents with whom the child(ren) primarily reside(s) are a vulnerable group in our community, recognized as such by the Ontario Human Rights Commission. There is a shortage of resources tailored to single parents, relative to other vulnerable groups in our community.

The absence of such resources, along with simply having WAY less time than other family structures, distinguish this group from from other vulnerable groups and other household formations. These factors, often intersected with trauma, among other challenges, serve to heighten the barriers that confront single parents, and prevent stability, financial security, and onward movement past them.

What We Do

Helping You Navigate

Through legal assistance and beyond, Onward Single Parent Advocates assists low-income single parents to overcome the unique barriers that obstruct their path to income security and overall autonomy. We support and advocate for single parents through their particular challenge(s) that are blocking their path towards autonomy, including with/by:

  • Providing a general overview of family law entitlements and procedures.
  • Providing basic family law legal advice, known as "summary advice."
  • Addressing the barriers that may have prevented a client from previously seeking (or increasing their) child and spousal support.
  • Assisting clients with obtaining a Legal Aid Certificate and finding the right family lawyer, which may include contacting Legal Aid Ontario, finding interpreters, and lobbying colleagues and other organizations.
  • Courtroom support.

  • Applications for subsidized housing.
  • Applications for Ontario Works (OW) and Ontario Disability Support Program (ODSP.)
  • Finding childcare.
  • Finding a family doctor.
  • Mental health advocacy and support (not counseling or therapy.)
  • Applying for jobs, including assistance with resumes.
  • Applying for school.
  • Supporting and finding supports for victims of intimate partner violence, including through the criminal court process.
  • Assistance with other client-specific obstacles.
